Victorian Hair Mourning Pieces

from $375.00

As a way to commemorate the dead, families of the late 19th and early 20th centuries would create ornate, often braided adornments from the hair of their deceased loved ones. Originating in the 17th century, the mememto mori practice gained popularity by Queen Victoria during the Victorian era as she wore pieces made from her late husband's hair. Memorial jewelry was seen as a way to honor the dead for the rest of time seeing as human hair does not decay.

These pieces are from the late 19th-early 20th century. Both are gold plated and are adorned with antique watch chain hardware and lockets.

The longer chain with round locket is 12.5" and adorned with 2 garnets and a tiny pearl.

The shorter, heart locket piece is 8.5" long
